Executive Creative Director
Richard received his BS marketing degree at the University of Maryland, College Park. He also studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.
Right out of college, Richard was working on both packaging design and advertising work for Black & Decker at Bridgman Associates in Annapolis, Maryland.
Soon after, he could be found at Adler Shwartz Design in Baltimore putting Christy Brinkly on the cover of a CoverGirl annual report and designing a plethora of marketing materials for clients like The Rouse Company, Eaton, American Cancer Society, Sweetheart Cup and the Smithsonian Institute (where he designed a series of album covers of jazz greats.)
Advertising being his true love, Richard joined Harant Sohegian Advertising in Georgetown, Washington D.C. before being recruited by W.B. Doner Advertising in Baltimore. At Donor he quickly gained acclaim on accounts such as Marriott’s Roy Rogers fast food restaurants and McCormick Spice Company.
As part of a handful of renegade Doner employees that started Smith Burke & Azzam in Baltimore, (no relation) Richard rose to the position of Partner, Senior V.P., Creative Director due to his award-winning work for clients like Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino, Quality Inns International, Cort Furniture, Playboy Magazine, Baltimore Orioles Baseball, Head Sportswear, Marriott’s Great America Theme Parks, PBS, the National Enquirer and the Washington Times.
Always looking for new opportunities, Richard then jumped to VanSant Dugdale in Baltimore as Partner, Senior V.P., Creative Director where he advanced the brands of companies like USF&G Insurance, Sallie Mae, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Jiffy Lube and Westinghouse Defense.
Richard then started his own successful marketing company called Smith & Associates where he enjoyed clients Cellular One, AT&T Wireless, Digex Internet, American Mobile Satellite Corporation, Akamai Technologies, Izod Golfwear, Baltimore’s Westside Renaissance, Synchronicity Boutique and Advance Business Systems, the largest Savin Dealer in the U.S.
Richard has won numerous national and international awards including gold Lions at Cannes, Clios, and Addy’s and has been named Adweek “Art Director of the Year, Southeast Region”, Adweek “Hottest Creative Agency of the Year” while Creative Director, Winners Magazine “10 Best Art Directors in U.S.” His work has been published in Communication Arts, Art Directors Annual, Ad Age, Adweek and Winners Magazine.
